America Needs The Draft A draft starts when there is a major crisis and extra troops are needed for combat. The draft only calls men to duty in a certain order in which they registered. This is called the lottery. Only when Congress passes and then the president signs legislation, the draft can begin. After the Vietnam War was completely over congress felt the draft should be put to an end. The draft was finally put to an end in 1973 by congress. This pamphlet has been created to help you understand why the draft should be brought back in todays society. Government Still Finds Ways to Keep Troops Overseas Yes, congress ended the draft back in 1973, but they also authorized a stop-loss order, which means each branch of the†¦show more content†¦I feel if we are going to be forced to sign up for something, then it should at least be in effect, and not have our troops be deceived by having their enlistment be prolonged. The Call to Duty In 1965, the United States deployed 20,000 troops a month to Vietnam. In 1968, the United States deployed 40,000 troops a month. This is an enormous number of troops we sent into battle. If the draft were to be brought back today, I feel the number of troops we would send in to battle should be a much smaller number than 40,000 soldiers a month. Right now, there are roughly 135,000 American soldiers in the Middle East. I think we should definitely have more than 135,000 troops over there. In comparison to the amount of troops deployed in 1968 and the amount deployed now, it is just a small fraction of the troops. Of course, I am not saying we should deploy nearly 40,000 troops a month, but I do feel in order to get everything accomplished over there that needs to be, we should have more than 135,000 troops in action. Should There be a Draft for the War on Terrorism? I do believe there should be a draft for the war on terrorism. I know we are keeping soldiers over in the Middle East too long just because there are not enough American troops to rotate and send them back home.
